HUMN 50 - The Artful Life    ( 3.00 -单位)
A broad range of the arts, from a variety of historical periods and cultures, will be examined as expression and integration of self. Explore creativity as process, product, and attitude toward life. Study the artist as seeker of authenticity and the relationship between art and artist. Students will learn how to respond critically as well as to articulate their experience of great works of the human imagination. Explore foundational principles and theories in the various humanities disciplines.

  1. Articulate the modern concept of self and art as self-expression.
  2. Explain how or why each human life is or could be art.
  3. In oral or written form, discuss subjective and objective evaluation of art.

HUMN 60 - Creativity and the Community    ( 3.00 -单位)
The Arts as an expression of the community; the relationship between creativity and community; the artist as the con科学 of 社会 and the role of the audience in completing an artwork. Themes include the artist as prophet, art as transformative experience, the arts and social justice, and the shock of the new.

  1. Describe how artist functions as prophet and identify prophetic themes.
  2. Through written or oral presentations, discuss art as communal expression and transformative experience.
  3. Distinguish differences between art as personal expression and art as transformative of 社会

HUMN 65 - The American Style    ( 3.00 -单位)
人文学科 of the United States. Major works of literature, 绘画, 雕塑, 体系结构, 电影, 音乐, 哲学, 科学, 宗教 and political and social institutions. Particular attention to values and meanings that reflect the American cultural experience, specifically the crisscrossing dynamics of race, 种族, 性别, 宗教 and class in American 社会.

  1. Describe the significance of a given piece of American Art (any form) in terms of what led to it and what it will lead to
  2. Explain how the arts (e.g., 音乐) reflect 和象征ize American social and ethical values.
  3. Explain how philosophical ideal shaped the American character & 社会.

HUMN 68 - World Mythology    ( 3.00 -单位)
Introduction to mythic themes recurring in global literature, the visual arts, and 音乐; gods, 人类, heroes; their origins, 变化, historical development, and full expression in classical times and continued presence in the arts. (Formerly HUMN 28)

  1. Demonstrate understanding and appreciation of at least three classical theories of mythology, drawing from the following: archetypes, 替罪羊, 位置/空间, 宗教, 仪式, 宇宙的起源, 和象征.
  2. Describe and define Joseph Campbell's monomythic theory of the hero's journey
  3. Describe the value of mythology subjectively and objectively.

HUMN 72 - Contemporary 人文学科    ( 3.00 -单位)
Visual, literary, and/or 音乐al works of art that reflect the issues and concepts of their time. A perspective through exploration of chosen works.
